Tahirid Dynasty Flag (821–873)
The green war banner of the Tahirid Dynasty, symbolizing Persian-Islamic governance (821–873).
The Tahirid Dynasty Flag (821–873) is represented as a green field with a golden and silver Dhulfiqar sword, symbolizing military power, governance, and loyalty to the Abbasid Caliphate. Although the Tahirids were initially appointed as governors of Khorasan by the Abbasids, they ruled with significant autonomy, marking an early step toward Persian self-governance after the Arab conquest. The green background is traditionally associated with Islam, while the Dhulfiqar sword, historically linked to Imam Ali, represented authority and divine legitimacy. The Tahirids were eventually replaced by the Saffarids, who fully severed ties with Abbasid rule.
